Audacity’s Envelope Tool allows you to draw volume automation directly onto your audio waveform by creating control points that define how volume changes across the timeline. Unlike static volume adjustments that apply the same level throughout an entire track, envelopes provide frame-by-frame control where you can make volume decrease gradually, spike dramatically, or create complex automation patterns. This non-destructive automation lives in the track’s control data rather than modifying the actual audio file, meaning you can adjust or remove it anytime without quality loss.

• Accessing the Envelope Tool: Select the Envelope Tool from the Tools Toolbar (the tool with a curved line icon), or press F2, which allows you to click on the waveform to create control points that define volume over time.
• Creating Control Points: Click anywhere on the waveform to add a control point—a small circle marker that you can drag vertically to increase or decrease volume at that specific moment. The line connecting control points shows how volume transitions between points.
• Shaping Volume Curves: Create subtle fades by placing control points far apart with gradual vertical movements, or create sudden volume spikes by placing closely-spaced points with sharp vertical changes. Double-click control points to delete them if you need to adjust your automation curve.

Practical Application

Select a vocal track and switch to the Envelope Tool, then create control points to fade the vocal in over the first 3 seconds by placing a point at zero volume at the start and dragging it to full volume 3 seconds later. Next, create a second automation curve that reduces the vocal volume by 3dB during the chorus section by placing points above and below the chorus region with gradual transitions.
